2001 Fall Wood Fire - ERROR MSGFriday through Monday, October 19 - 22,
Fees: $135 members, $180 non-members, $75 College students and $45 Secondary students with recommendation Lugano alberghi tariffe basse Craig Edwards, owner of Banner Oak Pottery, will lead a fall wood firing in the anagama kiln designed be Svend Bayer and constructed by a team of workshop attendees in the summer of 2000. Candling will begin on Wednesday, and participant shifts will begin on Friday morning, October 19th and continue through the end of the firing Sunday or Monday October 21st or 22nd whenever temperature is reached. Participants should be available to work 4 hour shifts throughout firing process. Loading of the kiln will take place prior to Wednesday the 17th with times being arranged through Craig or Emily at Banner Oak Pottery. Unloading of the kiln will take place the weekend of October 27th depending upon weather. Firing the wood kiln is a physically demanding process and participants should be prepared for heavy lifting, varied weather conditions and be willing to assist with all tasks necessary. The 22 long tunnel Anagama will allow participants room to include 30 - 60 pieces, depending upon size, in the firing. Each participant will be expected to assist with loading, firing, unloading and cleanup. Meals will be potluck; food and basic beverages are included in the workshop fees. Topics covered throughout the firing include: how this kiln works and how it compares with other styles of wood kilns; what happens to the clay and pots during a firing; what key temperature points and techniques are used to get specific results; stacking principles and strategies; stoking rhythms used to achieve rate of climb in temperature; fuel sources and environmental concerns; aesthetics of wood firing; marketing an artist's work. Items should be glazed prior to loading; some base glazes will be provided. A listing of appropriate glazes will be provided to registered participants. | | | Svend Bayer - Slide & Throwing Presentations Saturday & Sunday, October 13 & 14 Workshop Fees: $70 members, $85 non-members, $45 College students and $30 Secondary students with recommendation Slide Presentation Fees: $10 members, $15 non-members, $5 College and Secondary students The slide presentation will take place Saturday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 pm and will include a potluck dinner. Collectors and patrons are encouraged to attend this fun filled evening of art, stories and philosophy. The Throwing Workshop will begin at 9:30 am on Saturday and continue until 4 pm with an hour for lunch on your own. Sunday the workshop will begin again at 10:00 am and wind up around 3 pm. The workshop will cover preparation of clay, physical requirements of throwing large, techniques of centering large pieces of clay, building pieces on the wheel, coil and paddling methods of throwing, throwing in sections, decorating techniques, production schedules, studio layout and source of inspiration. Students will have an opportunity to practice wheel techniques and receive coaching from Svend as time allows. Beginning Throwing Classes In this class, you will learn the fundamental techniques of throwing on the potter's wheel. Each student is responsible for the cost of their own tools. Kits will be available at the first class (approximately $10). Class limited to 5.
