Creating Web Pages for the Folkways site

Hotels in BolognaAfter you have contacted the webmaster and had a site created for you to upload your pages, you can follow this work flow guide to create a new page and put it on this site:

A web site is a collection of web pages. This guide assumes you have already got photographsready. Either scan existing photographs or take pictures with a digital camera, and have eachphotograph about 300 pixels wide and saved as 72 dpi jpg files.

Work Flow:

1. Create your text in WordPerfect 8 (or later) or in Microsoft Word, so that it can be easilyconverted to HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). All web documents need to be in htmlformat, with a file name extension of either .htm or .html.

ERROR MSG2. Convert your text to html as directed by your wordprocessing program.

3. Use formatting tools in your editing software (WordPerfect, Netscape Navigator, MicrosoftFront Page) to format your web page.

  1. ERROR MSGkeep it simple, avoiding backgrounds that make reading the words hard.
  2. be sure to give your page a title that uses the keywords internet search engines will use tofind your page

4. Insert your photographs into the web page. Photos should be 72 dots per inch (dpi) jpg orjpeg files. JPG is a compression format, which makes the file size of your photos much smallerso the pictures load faster. Using a higher resolution than 72 dpi just slows things down butdoesn't increase the quality on the screen, because most monitors don't display higher resolutionthan this.

5. In Microsoft FrontPage, load the web. The URL (Universal Resource Locator) for ourwebsite is http//:www.folkways.org. This is its "address," which allows web browsers to find it andload it. You will be prompted for a user name and a password. We will give these after you have registered with us,since these need to be controlled.

6. In FrontPage, go to "file" and then "import" to bring your pages onto your website. Eachpage and each photograph is a separate file, and each needs to be imported. If you import yourhtm page but not the photo file, when you load the page it will not be able to find thephotograph.

7. Now put "hotlinks" in place. Hotlinks are the most important feature of the Internet. Theyallow you to "click" on a link, and go to the URL indicated.

At the bottom of each web page, you should have a hotlink that takes you back to the homepage for your school's site (e.g. "www.folkways.org/Townsend.htm", and another one thattakes you back to the front page for the entire site (www.folkways.org/index.htm). On websites, the home page is always "index.htm."

You also need to add a link TO your new page from an existing page. After youedit a page toadd a link, be sure to save it before you close it.
