Tektronix to Resolve Problem of "Data Cholesterol" in ERP Systems with OuterBay Archiver
Cite cost and efficiency advantages over data warehousing and built-in-house solutions

SAN JOSE, Calif. (March 12, 2001) - OuterBay Technologies, asupplier of performance-resolution software that maximizes the performance, reliability and round-the-clock availability of mission-critical packaged ande-business applications, today announced that its data archivingsolution, the OuterBay Archiver, has been selected to resolve the problem ofdata cholesterol in Tektronixs enterprise resource planning (ERP) softwaresystem. Tektronix (NYSE: TEK) is the leading provider of a broad range ofapplication-specific test, measurement, and monitoring solutions.

Like many companies that have launched ERP systems in thelast three years, Tektronix has seen dramatic growth in the number of recordsin their Oracle Applications financial services database. Tektronixs systemadministrators foresaw a time when they would no longer be able to manage theirIT infrastructure with optimal performance. To ensure that data cholesterolwas not going to impede user access to critical data or become a barrier to theimplementation of key future IT initiatives, Tektronix sought the OuterBayArchiver for its ability to enhance their data management capabilities.

TheOuterBay Archiver is the first software product designed to alleviate theproblem of data build-up in packaged and e-business applications. The same waythat cholesterol builds up over time in the human circulatory system andimpairs its ability to function, data builds up over time in OracleApplications and slows down the system, said Richard Butterfield, COO ofOuterBay. You can simply remove less timely data from the database to a datawarehouse, but that severely limits access to that information. Ideally youshould be able to transfer the data to an archive that is accessible from yourstandard application forms and reports, and the OuterBay Archiver makes thatpossible.

OracleApplications offers a purge function, but not an online archive feature.OuterBay Archiver utilizes Oracle Applications purge functions to intelligentlydeposit older data into an archive database that Tektronix users can access viathe same interface they use to access the production database. OuterBayArchiver enables Tektronix to reduce hardware upgrade costs, finish batch jobson time and reduce backup and copy time that could tie up network traffic.

If we were to create a custom financial datawarehouse, or purchase a data warehouse solution with prewritten summary views, then wed have to use extracting tools to get the data. Our users would have tolearn how to use it, and we would have to provide additional resources tosupport it, said Callie Gates, Information Services manager at Tektronix.Thats costly and extremely inefficientparticularly since no one wants tocreate a new process for handling five-year old data. For the cost of hiring anin-house, custom solution-building team for eight months, we can have OuterBayArchiver up and running. OuterBay Archiver put us light-years ahead of where wewould have been if we had tried to custom-develop a solution.
